Testing BLACK on Budget Android Hardware: Helio G99 and Dimensity 6080

Criterion Games shipped BLACK on the PlayStation 2 in 2006. The game pushed the console hardware hard with particle effects, procedural dust, and heavy audio mixing. On mobile devices, running it previously meant dealing with emulator overhead through AetherSX2 or NetherSX2, which pushed budget chips into thermal throttling.

The native Black-Android port takes a different route. Using ahead-of-time static recompilation, the original PS2 binary executes directly as ARM code on the CPU and Vulkan commands on the GPU.

We ran the port through 45-minute continuous sessions on three entry-level phones to measure frame pacing and heat generation.

Test hardware

  • Itel P55 5G: MediaTek Dimensity 6080, Mali-G57 MC2, 6GB RAM, Android 13
  • Samsung A07 4G: MediaTek Helio G99, Mali-G57 MC2, 4GB RAM, Android 14
  • Infinix Note 30: MediaTek Helio G99, Mali-G57 MC2, 8GB RAM, Android 13

All devices used stock vendor firmware and default system graphics drivers.

Real-world performance

The port ran without crashes across all three handsets from the introductory cutscene through the Trenches stage.

  1. Framerate and pacing: The Mali-G57 MC2 held the target framerate without drops during heavy firefights and grenade explosions. We observed no micro-stutter when loading new room geometry.
  2. Audio and video: Pre-rendered cinematics and tactical reload audio played without crackling or sync drift.
  3. Power draw: Battery consumption hovered around 2.6W to 2.8W. Temperatures stayed under 39°C, avoiding CPU downclocking.

Required files and setup

The open-source engine executable does not package copyrighted game assets. You need a personal disc dump of the original PlayStation 2 release.

  1. Install the APK from the developer’s repository.
  2. Copy your extracted ISO image into the game directory on internal storage.
  3. Launch the game and map your controller or on-screen touch inputs.

Detailed hardware reports and setup notes appear on the BLACK Android Port page.
